DESCRIPTION:
Black Forest, wall clock, 30 hour, time and strike, weight driven wood plate movement in a wood case with ebonized trim, polychrome back painted glass dial featuring two men in 18th century miners’ uniforms, a foundry scene, and the words "Glück auf!" ("good luck") -- a greeting German miners used when wishing one another luck. The transferred design on the crest has related imagery including the crossed hammer and pick, a pan, shovel, and lantern. Below the dial on the case are the words "Gott mit uns" ("God with us") which was often used on Prussian heraldry as an expression of unity. On the bracket at the base of the clock is an eagle typical of the Prussian coat of arms.
CONDITION:
upper and lower finials are missing. Time-side chain is present, but off the ratchet. Back of pendulum has been filled with modelling clay. Bracket design of eagle is very degraded. Brass mending plates have been added to the rear to support the crest and bracket. Right side of case is separating from the top of clock. Frame around glass dial is loose. Clock will need servicing.
